Become an International Judge

World Sailing Race Officials Administration is governed by Section 3 of the World Sailing Regulations with specific critera outlined with the document 'Race Official Roles, Qualifications and Competences'.

The basic requirements for a candidate applying to become an International Judge are:

  • have attended a World Sailing Judging Seminar in the last four years;
  • have passed the written examination in the 4 years prior to 14 October in the year of application;
  • have served as a member of a protest committee for at least 4 principal fleet racing events. At two of these the candidate shall have been a member of an international jury (not umpired fleet racing events). One of these 4 events shall have been outside the candidate's Group (Groups A-H) or Member National Authority (Groups I - Q) and;
  • have obtained at least 3 complete reference forms, with the most recent 3 confirmed as IJ standard, fromt he relevant jury chairman. A reference form from an event without any protest or request for redress hearings is not a complete reference form. Any item marked on the reference form as below IJ standard means that automatically the overall assessment is below IJ standard, regardless of what is marked on the overall assessment. At least one of the 3 most recent forms confirmed as IJ standard shall be from an IJ Instructor or an IJ Grouped as Chief or Lead. This person may have been the Jury Chairman or a member of the IJ for the event (available within the IJ document library). Only one reference form per event will be accepted. A reference form completed more than 4 weeks after the event cannot be considered for application.

All candidates must ensure they have read the relevant Regulations in full in order to understand the complete qualifcations required to become an International Judge. (Regulation 31).
