With 13 medals to be decided in sailing at Wangsan Sailing Marina the South Koreans have excelled on their home waters.
Park Sung-bin won gold in the optimist after earning 27 points. The 14-year-old skipper became the youngest gold medallist in the host country's 831-member delegation. After 12 races in seven days, Park outpaced Malaysia's Muhammad Dhiauddin Bin Rozaini with 31 points. Suthon Yampinid of Thailand took bronze with 36 points.
Park, who began sailing five years ago at the advice of his father, said that he had the "feeling of the victory."
Jeemin Ha also won the gold for South Korea in the Laser, successfully defending his Asian title. The 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games gold medallist in the same event finished on 17 pouints after 12 races over seven days. The silver medal went to Malaysia's Khairulnizam Mohd Afendy with 23 points and the bronze to Singapore's Colin Cheng on 31 points.
"I will prepare for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro," Ha said after the victory. Ha also appealed for more financial support for sailing, saying, "It has been not easy training as conditions in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) is not good compared to other countries."
In the Men's 470 two-person dinghy event, the host country's duo of Kim Chang-ju and Kim Ji-hoon claimed gold, after gaining 24 points in 12 races, edging out Japan's Kazuto Doi and Kimihiko Imamura by one point. China's Lan Hao and Wang Chao took the bronze medal.
The two medallists expressed happiness as they had defeated the Japanese duo in neck-to-neck races.
"I am so happy for winning against the Japanese athletes who are ranked eighth in the world," Kim Chang-ju said.
Another male duo, Kim Keun-soo and Song Min-jae won Hobie 16, Open Multihull, gold after 12 races. The pair finished on 18 points, six less than Thai brothers and silver medallists Damrongsak and Kitsada Vongtim.
Singapore's Kimberly Lim and Savannah Siew claimed Women's 420 gold after taking six out of 12 race victories. Malaysia's Binti Jamil Nuraisyah and Umi Norwahida Binti Sallahuddin picked up silver whilst Korea's Nakyung Lee and Seoeun Choi picked up bronze.
A total of 14 gold medals are up for grabs in sailing in Incheon.
